Concrete is both strong and inexpensive and is also one of the most durable man made building materials.
However...
- Concrete has one fundamental flaw: as it hardens, normal concrete becomes porous and behaves like a dense sponge.
- Concrete contains excess water and as concrete hardens, this excess water leaves the concrete and creates a network of fine capillaries and internal pores.
- Microscopically, there are a multitude of passages through the concrete. There are small cracks around the aggregates. There are small fissures in the concrete from the shrinking that occurs during it's curing stage. There are voids where the water in the original mix once was.
- Concrete loves moisture - different mixes have different porosity, but under the right (or wrong) conditions, concrete acts like a giant sponge. It essentially becomes a “hard sponge” that allows water to bleed through the surface, causing damage to the concrete’s chemical composition and steel reinforcement.
- And once cracks appear the process only worsens and the downward spiral begins.
- More cracks mean more water intrusion, which results in faster deterioration.

- The site cut was approximately a meter high - our waterproofing team concentrated on the base & footings of the basement wall.
- The second waterproofing image shows our waterproofer finishing off the top of the retaining wall.
- The waterproofing method involved spraying Liquid Rubber over the finished job.
- As specialist waterproofing contractors, we spent a lot of time detailing the waterproofing product on the base of the foundation at the footing level.
- Basement concrete slab footings often have penetrations through the slab.
- This was below the concrete slab line, so we applied an extra heavy coating of liquid rubber membrane to seal all pipes & penetrations through the basement wall.

Case Study - Waterproofing Cement Block Retaining Wall
- Top section of the concrete block basement wall was rendered & quite rough. The brick & cement block work was pre-rendered to provide a suitable surface for the waterproof membrane to be applied.
- The Findlay-Evans Team completed the project by totally spraying over the entire surface with an application of Liquid Rubber product.
- Waterproof membrane protection was provided with Arma-Blue. Protection sheet that is self-adhering and also provides an extra water protection barrier.

- Waterproof membrane protection was provided with Arma-Blue. Protection sheet that is self-adhering and also provides an extra water protection barrier.
- For cost savings, Arma-Blue protection sheet can be provided to the builder for installation.
- The protection sheet is applied directly to the membrane.
- This gives a robust & long-life membrane protection – especially during backfill which prevents the membrane from being damaged.

Durability of design and materials is mandatory with below grade waterproofing systems. Below ground waterproofing is one of those areas usually unseen and I am not sure if it is this "out of sight", out of mind" mentality, however it is an area of construction often neglected.
Case Study - Waterproofing Protection
Waterproofing Membranes - Project completed at Bega Cheese. We were contracted to apply a Liquid Rubber Membrane to a chemical concrete bund area used for storing, stacking and holding chemicals.
Waterproofing Preparation
- First of all, by cleaning it thoroughly
- By power washing it
- And allowing it to dry
Once the primer was cured, we set about masking up all the intricate pipe work and areas that didn't need to be sprayed.
This took quite some preparation - the crew set about preparing by hand and detailed all the steel, concrete, cement shape.
Liquid Waterproofing for Concrete Protection
Once that was done, we set up the purpose build special spray rig and sprayed the relevant areas of the bund that required waterproofing.
This was sprayed to 1.500 microns thick, coating, just to make sure that we had a good coating over the whole area.
